Lesson 7

Hey everyone, my name is Kei. How is your new life going? I hope you guys are really enjoying yourself now. Have any of you ever been to Toronto, Canada? This city is actually very traditional and beautiful. During this summer vacation, I went to Toronto to visit my friend for a week.
On the first day, I went to North York. It has many Korean restaurants, and I went to a restaurant that my friend recommended. I ate gamjatang there. It was really hot and delicious actually. In Toronto, it was cold at night (around 20C, 68F) even in the summer. That made the food more delicious.

Kei.jpg

Next day I went to Niagara Falls with my friends. I used Casino Bus to go there because the bus carries us to the casino town next to Niagara Falls. Before I visited Niagara Falls, I played in the casino, but I ended up losing money. I really enjoyed it though. Finally I could see Niagara Falls. The falls were really huge. I didn’t expect their enormous size. They were amazing. I boarded a small ship to get very close to the Canadian Fall (It is bigger than American Fall). I got very wet.

On the third day, I traveled to downtown Toronto. It has many international towns, such as China Town, Korean Town and Little Italy. Also, I found Japanese restaurants, where I ate udon, tonkotsu ramen, and takoyaki. These foods reminded me of my life in Japan. I also went to Kensington Market; it is a traditional market that has ethnic clothes, food and other interesting items. I didn’t feel like Kensington Market was located downtown because the market has retro style.

The next day, I walked around downtown Toronto. I went to the Ontario Legislative Building and Casa Loma. These were really beautiful traditional buildings that we have never seen in Arizona. I couldn’t go inside, but I was satisfied viewing the outside. I also went to Queens Park to take a rest, and I saw squirrels. Before the sunset, I went to Toronto Island. On the way to there, I saw the sunset behind the buildings on the ship. That was really wonderful. My friend took me to the secret place where we can see the amazing night scenery. When we got to the place, nobody was there. The night scenery was awesome with very vibrant colors that complimented the background of the city. If I was with the girl who I loved the most, I would have said “I love you”.

kei3.jpg

On the fifth day, I walked around to a different part of downtown Toronto. I went to Fort York, Old City Hall, New City Hall and CN tower. Actually, Toronto is beautiful traditional town, but I also saw many modern buildings. I really enjoyed while walking around downtown. I went to the CN tower at day time. I could see all of Toronto from the CN tower. I tried to see sunset and night scenery from there. I waited for a while, and the sunset was starting. Just like the sight from the Toronto Island, I really enjoyed the vibrant colors. It was getting dark, when I realized there was amazing night scenery like a jewel box. I regretted why I didn’t have a girlfriend then.

On the sixth day, I also walked around the other parts of downtown. I found a very good Japanese restaurant there. I ate sushi, miso soup and tempura. Surprisingly, the restaurant was all you can eat, so I paid around $17 for the whole meal. I totally recommend this restaurant. (I forgot the name, but I remember the place). After eating at the restaurant, I went to the University of Toronto. It is also a very traditional building, where I found a small church. I just felt like I was astray into a wonder land. After that, I went to Tim Hortons (it is a famous coffee shop in Canada), and finally I got an ice cappuccino. In my opinion, visitor should get an ice cappuccino in Tim Hortons at least once. It was kind of bitter, but I tasted sweet later. I also went to Union Station, where is the biggest station in Toronto. I visited all of the places I think travelers should go.

kei6.jpg

On the last day, I just went to the airport and got on a plane, and said good bye to Toronto. This trip was the first trip for me to go by myself. I had many troubles, but I really enjoyed this trip. Toronto has many delicious foods, beautiful traditional buildings and wonderful sights. I definitely recommend you guys to visit Toronto (not during winter).

Lesson 6 『

I hope everyone's start to their new semester is off to a good start!! :)

This time Ross wrote a new article for us of his trips over summer!! I hope you enjoy it!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey everyone, my name is Ross. I hope to meet a lot of you during the school year if I haven’t already. I hope everyone has enjoyed their vacation!
Over the summer vacation I went to New York, Israel and New Jersey. I will cover those three areas today. The time of my vacation was from May 22nd to June 6th of 2012.
The reason I took the trip was to visit family and experience Israel for the first time to see a lot of history and heritage of the Jewish religion.
This is Rhode Island. It had beautiful scenery, but it is also very small. There is not much to do in Rhode Island from what I experienced though.
Ross1.png
I took the train to New York several times. I visited places like Kinokuniya, Hard Rock Café and the one of the oldest bars in New York.
After spending a few days in New York and Rhode Island, I left for Israel with a group of forty people.
Ross2.png
While in Israel the first area we visited was Jerusalem. We spent time at the Western Wall and visited several museums. A lot of these places requested we did not take photos due to religious reasons though.
After spending a few days hiking and visiting museums, we left for Tiberias to go hike more places and visit the Dead Sea. Along with going to Tiberias we got to have eight Israeli soldiers join us on our Birth-Right trip.
While in Tiberias we went into more poverty stricken areas and got to experience a different side of the culture. Tiberias also has a few military bases that we were lucky enough to visit. Soldiers in the military base gave us information about current weapons that the Israel Defense Forces use.
One of the days in Tiberias we decided to climb Mountain Masada very early in the morning. The day prior to climbing the mountain we rode camels around the camp we would stay at that night. The camel I got to ride threw me off its back a few times before letting me on him though.
Ross3.png
The sunrise at Masada was beautiful, but it was cloudy that day, so it was very difficult to get a good picture of it. After we reached the top of the mountain, we had to climb down the opposite end, which proved to me more difficult than the climb up. After getting lunch, we went to the Dead Sea to relax and float around.
We spent about three days in Tiberias. We left to go Tel Aviv, which was a very active part of Israel. Especially in the night life, as going to a club was a very common thing to do at night for people of any age. Tel Aviv is located next to the Mediterranean Sea, so a lot of people spent their time going to the beach, playing sports like valley ball or surfing.
Ross4.png
Our last day in Israel had us traveling back to Jerusalem to visit another museum and finally back to the airport to come back to the United States.
The food in Israel was very different than anywhere else I have ate so far. There was a lot of hummus which is a dip or spread that could be added to almost anything. It gave the food a different taste. It was also common to eat falafels, it looks like a meat ball, but it is actually vegetarian. People would often eat both with pita bread.
The last stop on my trip was to New Jersey. New Jersey is only a couple hours away from New York. While in New Jersey I got to see several of the places I went to when I was very young. It was very nostalgic.
Lesson 5 『初めての☆ハリウッド☆』
みなさんお久しぶりです!!長かったという人もいれば、短かったという人もいた夏休みももう最後の数日となりました。
今回はちょっと(かなり。汗)前にだいさんに書いていただいた春休み中のカリフォルニアへ行ったときの旅行記です☆
Hey guys!! It's been a while but here's a new addition to our travel blog!!
It was an article written by Dai a while ago (maybe a LONG time ago...) about his trip to California over spring break!! Enjoy!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I went to L.A. and San Diego for Spring Break. I came to the U.S. in January of this year, and this was my first experience here in the U.S. Which is why I worried about the location, transportation, travel expenses, etc. My friends invited me to go on this trip, so I decided to travel with them.

dai1.png

Of course this was my first time seeing the scenery, so as a personal goal I aimed at seeing many places. In the sense this trip was truly fulfilling.

We went to two beaches, Santa Monica Beach and Huntington Beach.
I was able to relax at both of them.

dai2.png

And the night view at Griffith Observatory was truly impressing. On that day it was very cold, but I think it was good to go there. It was more impressive than Astronomy. haha

dai3.png

After all, we went to Hollywood!! I was overwhelmed by the scale and very satisfied with the shopping!

dai4.png

After shopping, we rested in Disney’s café.

dai5.png

dai6.png

This was just a small part of the trip. In addition, we went to Beverly Hills, Culver City, Little Tokyo, Korea Town, Old Town…etc.
It was kind of hard to look around all of them, but I was able to meet people that had a great impact on me. I really thank them. The trip was very benefical!!

Lesson 4 『

arisa1.jpg

arisa2.jpg

arisa3.jpg

arisa4.jpg

arisa5.jpg

Lesson 3 『

New York♪

Hola! How is everyone doing? This is Akane, buried in mountains of homework and tests lately.

Well our theme today will be the amazing New York!

I got the chance to go to New York a while ago…I think the beginning of April in 2010 (4 day stay?).

It was for a trip through orchestra, so we went with a big group of about 50 (& instruments)!
After about 2, 3 hours on the plane we finally reached the world famous New York.

O.M.G. Times Square was such an amazing place. The atmosphere could not be captured by just pictures and videos.

New york 1

The popular M&M world had countless amounts of different colored M&M’s, and the ToysRUs had an indoor ___________ !!

New york 2
Ferris wheel!!

The next thing up is Ellis Island.
For those of you that are not good with history…

Back in the days where it had only been a short amount of time since the United States became an independent country, many immigrants from all over the world entered the new country.
During that time, immigrants from Asia had to go through Angel Island, and those from Europe had to go through Ellis Island. There at Ellis Island, they still keep the names of those immigrants that passed through many years ago.

On the way to Ellis Island by ferry, you also pass right in front of Statue of Liberty!!

New york 3

Last but not least, a place that is not as popular as the other places introduced but was just as significant in the trip; STARDUST Diner.

The food there was…ordinary. Ordinary hamburgers you might even be able to top off here in Tempe. However, the waitress/waiters are what make it worth it. They perform many popular songs as you are eating!!

New york 4

(According to rumors, they are people trying to get into Broadway…?)

They were so powerful with their voices and their performances as they pulled out some new songs and some old time favorites.

New York has many entertainers on the side of the street; another possible way to enjoy New York is by searching for them.

HOWEVER…

We did not get into any serious trouble (maybe because we were such a big group) but it is NEW YORK, some entertainers at the side of the street demand money.

It is not recommended to approach them if you are unsure of their policy, especially if you are not in a big group, or have any men within the group.

ANOTHER THING…

Compared to Tempe, there are MANY people in New York that tries to steal wallets or expensive stuff from others. And they are PROS; you may not even notice.

Instead of backpacks, or purses with big mouths for easy access, try to carry around a bag with zippers, and maybe a shoulder-bag so that you can have it out in front where you can see it.

NEVER leave your bag hanging from the back of the chair ANYWHERE (like restaurants, etc.).

Also remember to keep cell phones and wallets (especially guys) AWAY from back pockets where it is an easy target.

LASTLY…

Those people that steal from others usually target tourists.

Keep an eye out even when you are taking pictures, and try not to spread out maps when you are in a crowded area.

New York can be a place for great time, but it can turn into a dangerous place instantaneously.

If anyone has the chance to visit there, I hope everyone will search thoroughly about the area, and have enough knowledge prepared beforehand.

Arisa will be writing the next article for us!! Make sure you come back to check that out!!
